What’s the difference between sport psychology and performance psychology?

Performance psychology takes a more inclusive approach to address performance enhancement in various domains beyond athletics but shares the common principles and techniques to optimize human performance. While sport psychology specifically addresses performance in athletic settings, performance psychology takes a broader approach, encompassing a wide range of performance disciplines.

What is performance psychology?

Performance psychology is a specialized field within psychology that focuses on understanding and enhancing the mental and emotional aspects of athletic performance along with enhancing human performance across various domains. It involves the study and application of psychological principles and techniques to optimize the performance, motivation, and well-being of participants in diverse contexts beyond sports.

Once again, the same! These terms can be and are used interchangeably. It is whatever the participants feel more comfortable using!

Do we offer services for clients who live out of state?

Yes! We currently offer individual virtual sessions, so we can provide mental skills training regardless of your state.

Is performance psychology only for athletes?

No! Performance psychology is for athletes, performing artists, military, first responders, and even business professionals!

Who can benefit from mental skills training?

Everyone can benefit from mental skills training! There is always room to improve, whether you are a recreational or an elite athlete. Mental skills training takes you to the next level and is individualized to your specific needs.

Do you offer mental health services (anxiety, depression, etc)?

Currently, no. Clinical services such as helping with trauma, anxiety, depression, etc, are not in our competencies. Desirae is in school to gain these competencies and licensure but currently focuses on mental skills training.

What’s the difference between counseling and mental performance services?

While counseling addresses broader mental health concerns, mental performance services are more focused on improving specific cognitive and emotional skills for optimal performance in various contexts, such as sports, business, and academics.

What do your training and/or credentials mean?

Desirae has earned her Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology and is currently pursuing another Master’s degree in Counseling. She is working toward obtaining certification as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) with the Association of Applied Sport Psychology. CMPC is the sole accredited certification for mental performance services in North America.

How long will it take for me to see results?

It depends. The time it takes to see results with mental skills training can vary widely depending on several factors, including the goals, the specific skills being targeted, the intensity and consistency of the training, and the nature of the performance domain.
